- Jammu and Kashmir – Winter Wonderland

Jammu and Kashmir is the northernmost state of India comprising of three regions namely Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh. Jammu and Kashmir is called the 'heaven on earth' for its undulating snowy mountain peaks, high altitude cold deserts, beautiful lakes and ever blooming gardens.
The political upheaval has impacted the life in Jammu and Kashmir. Militancy and terrorism have taken their toll on this land which was long considered to be a paradise on earth.
Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, is visited by devotees who come every year to offer their prayers at the revered Vaishno Devi Shrine located over the Trikuta Hills in Katra. Raghunath Mandir has thousands of ammonite fossils called saligrams in the temple that represent the numerous Hindu deities. The other temples are the Ranbireshwar Mandir and Har-ki-pauri Mandir.
Jammu and Kashmir is home to several valleys such as the Kashmir Valley, Tawi Valley, Chenab Valley, Poonch Valley, Sindh Valley and Lidder Valley. It is home to several Himalayan glaciers, the longest one being Siachen glacier which is 70 km in length. Treks can be arranged to the valleys.
Srinagar, the summer capital of Kashmir thrives on the banks of the river Jhelum. Dal Lake in Srinagar is a famous tourist spot, and one of the most picturesque lakes in the country. It is full of 'Shikaras' or small boats ferrying people from the banks to the house boats. Another attraction of the city is the Mughal Gardens. Srinagar has a lot of sightseeing options like Hazratbal Mosque, Charar-i-Sharief, Martand Sun Temple, Shankaracharya Temple, Khanqah-e-Mola, Kheer Bhavani Temple, Shiv Khori and Jama Masjid to name a few.
Gulmarg and Sonamarg are famous for their snow covered skiing resorts, beautiful valleys and apple orchards. Pahalgam and Patnitop are two of the other popular hill stations in Jammu and Kashmir.
Kashmir is famous for its gardens from the Mughal era like Nishat Garden, Shalimar Garden and Chashmashahi. Dachigam National Park, Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve, Hemis High Altitude Wildlife Sanctuary and Karakoram National Park are some of the places that highlight the rich flora and fauna of Kashmir.
Ladakh is well-known for its breathtaking landscapes and Buddhist Monasteries. The important monasteries in Ladakh are Tsemo Gompa, Sankar Gompa, Karma Dupgyud Choeling Monastery, Shey Monastery, Thiksey Monastery, Hemis Monastery, Stakna Monastery, Matho Monastery and Spituk Monastery among others that contain statues of Avalokitesvara, Manjushri and Maitreya Buddha.
A visit to Jammu and Kashmir is incomplete without shopping for the exquisite handicrafts. The main products that you can buy from Jammu and Kashmir are Pashmina shawls which are made from the hair of ibex, Shahtoosh shawls that are made from the hair of the Tibetan antelope and traditional walnut furniture embossed with rich floral designs.
