Job search: how to succeed?

Decide what you want to be
If we look at the job search more closely, it's not that difficult to find a job. You just should divide this process into small stages and get thoroughly prepared for each of them: write a resume, analyze the workforce market, and think over questions and answers in an interview. And, of course, believe in yourself and your powers. If you look for a job for the first time, choose the company with the perspectives of the career growth. Probably, in a couple of years you'll go up the career ladder. If you are going just to change your present job, start your search long before you are laid off. If you have been laid off, it is unpleasant, naturally, but your life won't stop here. Don't get desperate. New job is a perfect way to develop oneself! This is another step ahead!
To find a job you'll be absolutely satisfied with, you should imagine what it should be like. So, answer the following questions:
In what field would you like to work?

What do you like more – to manage or to be subordinate?
Where would you like to work – in a big team, small company or on your own?
Which schedule is good for you – full time, part time, open-leave schedule?
What do you expect from your job – stability, career growth or creative realization?
What will you spend your money on?
Analyze labor market
Before going to the interview, gather as much information about the company you'd like to work on as you can. Find out what it deals with. Look for some information about it on the Internet: when it was founded, if it is successful, if it develops and whether the salary rate is high.
Study carefully the market the company works on, and in the interview suggest your ways to optimize its activity and increase profit. If your suggestions are based on the real facts and can be used at least partially, most likely you'll become an employee of the company in the nearest future.
Job Search
The one who seeks, always finds. And the sooner, the more information sources are used. Try calling the suitable companies or organizations. Probably, one of them has been searching for an employee and your call will be most timely. Tell your friends and acquaintances you're looking for a new job. Perhaps, they have the contacts you need. Besides, you've got a variety of job search papers and Internet. Study them at least three times a week.
Interview is the first step. Depending on your right replies in the interview, you'll be either hired or have to visit some more interviews.
So, you should predict the questions of an employer, and using your replies create an impression of an ideal employee as he/she sees it. Not only replies but questions as well matter a lot. Interview is a preparation for a long and mutually beneficial bargain. Discuss your working day, your duties and rights, an opportunity of the career growth, training, salary and remuneration package if there is any.
In the Interview
Interview is the most widespread form of interlocution. And the most responsible one as well. For job seekers going to occupy a high position, it may consist of several stages. First – a talk with an employee of the HR-department; then – a meeting with the immediate manager; and after that – an interview with the head of the company. In the interview you'll be tested in a number of ways to see your advantages and disadvantages, reaction to stressful situations. That's why be positive: radiate benevolence and confidence. No aggression! Benevolence is demonstrated in a smile; confidence – in voice, gestures, facial expression, posture. It should be seen from the first minutes of an interview. Choose the best position. Do not cross legs or arms – this position demonstrates reticence and distrust. When the interview is over, be first to stand up and part politely.
Don't get into verbal traps!
Any recruiter has them at his/her disposal. One of the most common is "verbal polygraph detector". You can be asked to retell your resume a couple of times or tell about your previous job to check if all the facts coincide. The best way to avoid it is to tell the truth. Another trap is that an interviewer in this or that way shows he/she is acquainted with your ex-employer and if necessary, can check everything you say. Be calm. There's nothing to worry about, is there? Excessive fussiness is a sign of a lack of confidence. Mainly, the traps are hidden in the questions of an interviewer. Always think why they're asked and what reply is preferable. For example, they can ask you about your ex-employer. If you readily start enumerating all of his/her drawbacks and telling about his/her awful attitude towards employees, most likely you won't get the job. In the interview you may be asked to take some psychological tests. Nowadays in book stores it's possible to find a number of manuals on employment tests. This helps to get prepared for the interview more thoroughly. Study them in advance, and you'll know what your replies will result in. And if you want, you'll be able to correct them.
Don't get discouraged!
You've been searching for the right job so long! And (finally) you've got an interview in a couple of days. Namely it will be crucial: whether you will be hired or not. The mood as if you were going to take an exam. Fear prevents you from relaxing. It's so because of uncertainty as you don't know how the employer will behave. Predict in advance all the actions an interviewer is going to take. As an option, you can use the method of visualization, which is really very efficient. Play in your mind the script of the interview: you confidently come in, introduce yourself, what you reply and what you ask.
Imagine you have been hired already. Thus, you'll program yourself for success.
Discuss your salary in the last turn. First, show all of your trump cards to your potential employer: certificates, work experience, command of foreign languages.
Your Appearance
Psychologists say a person needs only 30 seconds to create an image of the interlocutor. Clothes, hair cut, make-up will play an important role when getting hired. Try to get some information about the corporative style of the company and get dressed correspondingly. Clothes should match the position you'd like to occupy. A secretary, for instance, shouldn't put on a suit whose cost is about three salaries. But if you search for the position of a manager, pay attention to the details. Expensive watch, shoes are an important part of your image.
Avoid Mistakes
General impression about you is created from the details. One wrong action can spoil it. When applying for a job, don't:
Be late for the interview.
Avoid answering the questions.
Be ashamed to discuss salary or discuss it the first thing.
Say "I don't know".
Criticize the previous job and your ex-employer.
