DRTV-Things to Think About

Direct response television is the best option for many products simply because it is a method that is effective. However, there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes before the infomercial may be aired. In fact, there must be a plan for how the infomercial will be carried out, a script must be written, and there needs to be a well defined plan established on how the product will be introduced, demonstrated, and sold. Creating a DRTV campaign is not something you should do on your own. Instead, consider an experienced DRTV producer with significant experience in your niche market.

The reason a DRTV producer is needed is because it could be the difference between success and failure. In fact, it is one of the most important decisions that will be made through the entire DRTV campaign. A knowledgeable and experienced producer will certainly be worth the expense. Keep in mind, however, the importance of finding an experienced producer in your niche market. Simply because you find some great DRTV producers with experience in other markets is not enough and could have serious consequences. Make sure the producer has verifiable experience with your base market before offering a position. The right producer is a make or break decision so make sure it's one you focus on and pay attention to. Check their references and past work to see if the evidence backs up their claims.

It is also important to keep in mind the producer you hire will be paid the same amount regardless of the success of the infomercial. That's because most producers charge a flat upfront fee. You don't want to find a producer that is good at selling their resume but not selling your product. Get a feel for the producer by asking what ideas they have, how they would market your product, and what strategy they feel would work best. This might help you narrow the playing field.

Other things that should be evaluated include the overall budget for the infomercial and how that will be financed. If there are enough funds to begin the process, if a loan is necessary, if there are investors, and/or other sources of funds. DRTV is great in the sense that the return on the investment begins the same day of the infomercial. However, getting the funds together up front is crucial to the overall success of the campaign.
