Basic Safety in Gun Handling

Gun owners should observe gun safety at all times. Be a responsible gun owner.

Guns are primarily used by military forces and law enforcement agencies for defense and to uphold the law. There are many types of firearms ranging from the smallest handguns to bigger sizes such as rifles and shotguns.

Nowadays, there are many civilians also who acquire guns for property protection and self defense purposes. If you are a gun owner, there are certain gun safety rules you should observe to avoid any fatal accidents or harm to anyone. Owning a gun requires a lot of responsibility and discipline.

For your own safety, always presume that a gun is loaded. Even if anyone tells you that a gun is not loaded, it is important not to believe it if you have not checked it yourself. Make this a habit when handling a gun.

Familiarity will play a very important role in case of emergencies, when there is hardly time to think of what to do. One will just rely on rote mechanism in such cases.

Never shoot at any hard surfaces such as rocks, metal and other hard objects because there is a tendency that the bullet will ricochet in any direction which might hit to anyone or to you.

Guns come with a safety lock which prevents unintended firing. However, always keep in mind not to rely totally with these locking devices as it may also fail. It is best to always observe the most important rule to always point the gun in a safe direction.

Store your gun in a safe place when not in use. ensure that you store it in a way that children will not have access to it. The gun should be un cocked and locked for safety.

It is important to use the right ammunitions specific for your gun. Improper ammo may cause backfire and cause serious harm to you. Do not also use substandard ammos. If you are unsure, you may contact your gun store.

If you are on target shooting with friends or family, you might have the tendency of getting distracted especially when you are having fun. Remember to always stay focused on handling the gun.

Always follow these basic safety rules as these are the fundamentals of being a responsible gun owner. For your own good, you can attend several shooting courses so you will gain enough knowledge on gun safety and also improve your skills. If it is possible, allow yourself to practice your shooting skills. Remember that guns are for your protection and you need to learn some skills so you will have the confident in using your gun when the need arise.
