Voiceovers - making the message work

A message needs to communicate effectively with its audience. Yet there is a difference between a plainly spoken announcement at the airport and a commercial message you hear on TV. The announcement at the airport does communicate effectively and there is no need to use a professional artist to make the announcements. Then why are voiceovers by professional artists required for commercial messages?

The airport announcement needs to only inform the people at the airport. They do not need to emotionally connect with the audience. At the airport it is a captive audience and the ones for whom the message is intended are probably on the look out for the announcement and there is no real need to grab their attention.

Commercial messages on the other hand do not have a very attentive audience. There is a need to grab the attention of the viewer or listener and this needs a lot of talent. The message needs to emotionally connect with the recipient. And not only emotionally connect it should trigger the right emotional connect. If the wrong emotional connection is made the message will get the attention of the recipient but only to annoy the person and the message will not work. Which will mean a lot of effort by a set of professionals going waste.

For a person investing time and effort in creating a message this is an area of uncertainty. Whether the message will work or not. To this end the message would have been conceived by professionals and written by talented writers. However this is not enough to make sure the message will work.

One way to greatly reduce this uncertainty is to use a strong voiceover talent. The voice in the message is the most human element in it and therefore has a powerful ability to make the emotional connection and make the message work. A talented and experienced voiceover talent will have what it takes to deliver the message in a manner that it has the maximum impact. A professionally rendered voiceover requires a lot of skill which in turn is acquired through innate talent, hard work and a professional approach to assignments.
