A Contemporary Bathroom Vanity May Be Awe Inspiring, But Not Necessarily Expensive

A vanity can be antique, transitional or modern. You may also find another class termed as contemporary. Although some say that a contemporary bathroom vanity is more up to date than a modern bathroom vanity is, others take them to be the same. However, that is for the experts to debate and decide. For us modern or contemporary does not make much of a difference. It is their clean line, simplistic design and clever use of different materials that we find so very attractive. They are generally designed with the modern bathrooms in mind and go well with most other contemporary bathroom fixtures.

In contrast, the antique vanities are generally very bulky. They are generally made from wood such as teak and mahogany and are fitted with brass handles and other accessories. They are quite ornate and have an elegance of their own. However, such vanities rarely fit in modern bathrooms or go well with modern fixtures. That is why very few people opt for them. However, if your bathroom is suitable for such a vanity, do not hesitate to buy it. Do not buy one in contemporary style just because everybody else is doing that.

The transitional vanities on the other hand look as bulky as an antique vanity, but it does not have that kind of ornamentations. It is simpler in look, but not as simple as a contemporary vanity is. Yet, they have their own elegance and if it fits into your bathroom, you can always go for one. After all, a transitional vanity has a larger storage space than the contemporary style of vanities has and so they are very convenient too.

In other words, each type of vanities has some inherent advantages and that is why whatever you choose, choose with care. Today the vanities are designed by trained artists and they use combinations of materials such as wood, glass, brass, stainless steel and stone to bring about a special effect. That is why you can have such awe-inspiring bathroom vanities at such a low cost. Moreover, there are different kinds of such vanities. If you do not have enough floor space, you can go for wall-hung vanities too. Neither the antique nor the transitional style has such wall-mounted vanities. They are too bulky for that.

However, double vanities are found in all three styles. Such vanities hold two sinks instead of one and so are bigger in size. Consequently, they need bigger space. However, some modern double vanities have such an understated beauty that they do not seem to occupy any space at all. A wall-hung glass double vanity for instance will take up as much space as is required, but because it is transparent, it can create an illusion of more space than actually exists.

Even this illusion is very important. Some bathrooms are so cluttered and they feel so suffocating that one does not like to spend much time there. This, you should understand, is very unhealthy. The ambience of the bathroom should be such that one can spend the required time in the bathroom pleasantly. That helps to cleanse one in and out thoroughly and you must agree that is what is a bathroom is meant for.

Therefore, whatever fixture you buy, make sure that the bathroom has such a pleasant ambience that one does not mind spending quite some time in there. To bring about such a pleasant effect, take note of the following factors:

Size of the bathroom
Shape of the bathroom
Availability of natural light
Location of the plumbing lines
Color of the walls
Existing fixtures that cannot be changed or you do not want to change
Existing artificial lights

There are many more. To make a bathroom pleasant, the vanities have a big role to play, but so have mirrors and light. Any interior decorator will tell you how clever positioning of mirrors can change the dimension of any room. Depending on the position, a mirror can make a bathroom appear longer or wider. Lights too have equal effect on the atmosphere of the room. So does the colors of the walls. Adding one or two houseplants in attractive containers also can bring in freshness in the bathroom. Use all these to make your bathroom a pleasant place in which to spend some time.
