Why Are Dental Implants so Important?

Dental implants have become a standard restorative practice throughout the world. Dental implants are replacement tooth roots that are placed in areas of the mouth where there are missing teeth. The importance of dental implants is rooted in the necessity of maintaining the bone after tooth loss.

There are number of reasons why it is important to have dental implants to maintain the bone after tooth loss. Dental implants will help improve or maintain the performance, retention, and function of removal restorations. As well, it helps to improve facial appearance. Using a standard surgical method, the implants are installed in the bone by a dentist. After having the dental implant procedure, the implants will be left undisturbed for several months to allow the implants to bond with the bone. After there has been a suitable period of time allowed for healing, a small connector called an abutment is attached to each implant. The permanent replacement teeth will then be attached to the abutments.

The reason why replacing the tooth root is so important is that natural tooth roots are embedded in the bone which stimulate bone growth thereby providing a stable base to allow for comfortable chewing and biting. When teeth are missing, the bone that had once supported the teeth begins to deteriorate which is a process known as bone resorption. When installing dental implants and replacing missing teeth, the bone will be preserved because the bone forms a strong and long lasting bond to the implants which allows the implant to support the same functions as natural tooth roots.

When people undergo a dental implant procedure, they will have a number of appointments with their dentist so that impressions of their teeth and implant abutments can be taken. As well, they will have temporary replacement teeth placed which includes selecting the appropriate shade for the replacement teeth and creating a proper fit. The replacement teeth and the underlying structures will be constructed so that they securely attach to the dental implants.

Dental implants are designed to be a permanent solution to preventing bone deterioration; however, there are a number of factors that contribute to the lasting success of a dental implant procedure such as regular visits to the dentist for maintenance as well proper home care of the implants. Research has shown that when properly maintained, dental implant supported replacement teeth can last for more than 35 years. The chances of dental implants lasting throughout the life of the patient are very high when properly maintained. This is very important to consider when comparing it to typical tooth-supported bridge which lasts from 7 to 10 years. As well, partials and dentures are estimated to remain properly functional for about 5 years.

Because of the importance of our teeth and mouth for their function and esthetics, it is essential that we take proper care of them. Today, more people are now enjoying the benefits of dental implants, which is why the procedure is now becoming a standard practice in most dental practices throughout the world.
