If you know there are certain things that trigger a bad response from your dog, try and keep his attention whenever these things come up. As an example, if your dog doesn't like to be around other dogs, then you need to keep him busy with his attention focused on you when you approach other dogs while on a walk. This should help him establish a relationship between seeing that stimuli and good things happening.

Know when you might need professional help. If training is not going well, you may need a pro. A professional trainer can help you you back on track, and teach you how to properly train your dog.

Especially when you first begin training, your dogs can easily be distracted by each other or have different learning speeds so train them as individuals until they both fully grasp the concepts you are presenting.

A harness is less bothersome to your dog, but also prevents you from exercising control when you need to do so. When using a collar and harness together, only tug on the collar if necessary. This teaches the dog that he must obey you while the harness is on.

Using consistent commands all the time from every person who trains the dog will make training much less confusing for the dog.

To make sure your dog pays attention to you, you should use its name as often as possible. By using it as much as possible during the first weeks you own him, your puppy will learn that this sound is in reference to him. Select a name that is short and distinctive.

Teach your pet the proper way to walk on a leash. Learning to walk properly on his leash will keep you both safe when you are outdoors.

Train your dog to respond well to vet visits. Press your hands firmly over his body in the same manner that the vet will and offer him encouraging praise. Try and teach him to be tolerant of having his teeth and paws examined. You might want to ask your buddies to assist you in the process.

Playing tug-of-war with your puppy when you are working on training him is a bad idea. Aggressive games promote aggressive behaviors, such as biting. You don't want to set a bad example, so train your dog first before you start playing these kinds of games.

Having a dog and keeping your house in good shape should not be mutually exclusive. While a dog can cause quite a bit of destruction, and make a mess in your home, proper dog training will alleviate most of these issues.
