During the busy holiday period, plumbing problems are the last thing you need to worry about. Plumbing problems can be halted with a preventative inspection by Escondido plumbing. Relatives usually come to visit during the Christmas season, which will add extra use on the plumbing.

There are some things you will need to understand in case of an emergency and to help the Escondido plumbing when they come for an inspection. These things are good to know prior to when the plumber gets there, to help them locate cutoff valves.

Locating your main cutoff is the number one thing you should find out. The main water shutoff directs all the water that goes into your residence. Knowing where your main cutoff valve is, can stop your house from becoming flooded, in case you have a leak. This shutoff will typically be located where the water goes into the house, sometimes it will be buried. When checking the shutoff, see what kind of handle it has. A round type handle on the shutoff valve should be replaced with a lever type valve. The round handle might break easily, so have it examined, and replaced if necessary, during the inspection.

Secondly, knowing where all the under the sink and fixture cutoffs are located, is essential. Under the sink or on the water line coming from the fixture, you will find the cutoff valve that shuts the water off to that fixture. Using this cutoff valve, will only shut off the water to that specific area, instead of the whole house water supply. The fixture can often be replaced or repaired without turning off the main valve, by just turning off the one that controls the water to that fixture. Leaks usually happen behind the shut off valve handle.

Thirdly, knowing the common things that leak will permit you to check them on a repeated basis, plus when you are having an inspection the plumbers can look at them. Plumbing problems with toilets are usually the flushing mechanisms, the ballcock, tank seals or worn flapper valves. Looking for toilet leaks is easy with some food coloringapplied to the tank water, do not flush and wait about half an hour. When you look in the toilet bowl there will be colored water, if there are leaks. Common leaks like these, normally cause your water bill to be higher.

Last you need to check the setting on your hot water heater to turn it down, if the water is too hot making your energy bill to be higher. If your hot water heater is ten years old or nearly that age, you should look it over carefully for rust signs and leakage. Check out the bottom for rust and water leaks, in addition to the 2 front panels every 6 months. The serial number can tell you the age of your hot water heater, with the beginning two numbers being the month and the next two numbers are the year.

All these matters can be looked at during an Escondido plumbing inspection. Having a plumbing emergency during the holidays with visitors in the house can be stressful and cause lots of difficulties, which is not the holiday memories you are trying to make.
