Hardwood floor designs take a beautifully simple floor and make it something spectacular, not to mention customized for your decor. Get inspired with some design ideas.

That's of course not the point - you might want to add flair, a personalized or themed character and make the floor stand out, rather than sort of blend into the room. Hardwood floor designs can achieve this. You may have an old floor that could be spiced up with an inlay or border, or maybe you want your new floor to make a big impact from day 1. Either way a bit of extra time and skill can take a floor to another level.

Here are some design ideas for inspiration:

Patterns - Have the flooring installed in a pattern or shape rather than in traditional straight rows. You can install the flooring in a diagonal across the room or in a herringbone design. Both involve some extra planning and skill so they're not projects for the beginner installer. Make sure you or the installer you hired know what you're doing.

Borders - For a simple but smart hardwood floor designs, try a border with 3 rows in descending widths. Transform a standard, square border by adding extra rows around and inside the main border. If you make each border thinner than the next you'll have a 'triple' border of sorts with lines in descending widths.

Painting - Painting a whole floor can give you almost complete control over matching your hardwood floor designs to your d?cor. It can make it difficult to change the color later though and refinishing may become expensive and laborious. What you can do is paint a border or pattern around the perimeter of the floor or across the whole floor. The options are endless really, a checked design, a flowery corner decoration, a playful cartoon character in a child's playroom, you can customize your floor.

Wood floor inlays - Some of the most amazing hardwood floor designs fall into the category of inlays. The combination of different types of wood species expertly cut and made into round medallions or custom designs, they turn heads and make people wonder how such intricate work with wood is possible. If you're looking to impress or just want something really awesome to look at each day, inlays may be your design choice.
