Go Organic to Lose Weight and Stay Healthy

Are you a veggie person? Do you like eating greens because of its nutrient-content or simply because they taste good? Whatever your reason is, eating vegetables is the right way to stay healthy.

Veggies contain vitamins and minerals that nourish the body and keep it strong. These have fibers that help flush out toxins from your body. That’s why health buffs include vegetables in their diet.

However, a new research found that the veggies we enjoy eating today are not like the ones our grandparents enjoyed during their time. It showed that the produce in the country today tastes worse than before and that it has fewer nutrients. Take any vegetable from the supermarket today. Tests will show that it’s 5 to 40 percent lower in minerals like magnesium, iron, calcium, and zinc unlike the produce some 50 years back.

Strange eh? Despite the fact that the vegetables today are bigger in size, they don’t have the same amount of nutrients. As a matter of fact, jumbo-sized vegetables have a lot of “dry matter” that dilutes mineral concentrations.

Selective breeding intended to increase crop yields has caused the decline in important minerals in vegetables. Called the “genetic dilution effect,” vegetables lose a very significant amount of protein, amino acids, and minerals. This practice may increase crop yields but it definitely takes away the important nutrients in them.

Another thing that caused the decline of nutrients in today’s vegetables is the rise of chemical use in producing crops. Using chemical fertilizers and pesticides will definitely have an unpleasant effect on the produce’s nutrient content. While it enhances harvesting of modern crops, it prevents the produce from absorbing essential nutrients from the soil.

Choosing the organic way of producing crops will diminish the chance of getting less-nourished produce. Small local farms are cropping up as a result, and many of them use organic, sustainable farming practices.

Organic food is fresh, tastes good, and has better quality than those grown with the aid of chemical fertilizers. It is definitely the more nutritious and smarter choice. Why? A study on the benefits of organic foods showed that such produce has up to 40 percent more antioxidants than those with chemical fertilizers. Also, organic foods have higher levels of iron and zinc, which are beneficial to the body.

The results proved that eating such foods can increase the nutrient intake of people who don’t eat the recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables.

Being spared from various health problems such as cancer, neurotoxicity, and miscarriage in women is probably the best thing eating organic foods can do.

The switch to organic food is evident with the increase of small farms in the country. More farmers are going back to the old fashioned way of harvesting crops to get the same amount of nutrients to help keep us healthy and strong.
