Every child dreads going to see an orthodontist as if going to the dentist was not bad enough. Now you have to come to terms with getting braces put on thanks to your dentist who recommended that you go see an orthodontist.

Honestly getting your braces put on hurts until you get used to it. You also have to make sure your brushing really well because food can get stuck in your braces. You're not allowed to chew gum or any kind of hard candy, and the worst part of it is you have to get them tightened once a month.

Having braces put on may make you feel very unattractive unless you have the self confidence. You may feel like you will never be able to show your face at school again. Either that or just don't smile because your embarrassed about what people would say if you showed them your braces. You have to have the confidence to go walking around in public and you'll feel better about yourself. You have to go around with the who cares attitude. Go around thinking who cares if anyone talks bad about you. If anyone talks bad about you, then they're not your real friends.

When you get your braces put on, you may feel like you have metal in your mouth. That is the truth you do have metal in your mouth and the worst part about it is that you can taste it. You shouldn't be eating your favorite foods until you have had your braces on for at least two days because you won't be able to eat anything. All you can eat is jello, pudding, mashed potatoes, basically anything soft that you can swallow easily.

Once you have braces put on, they will give you a list of everything you can have and everything you can't have as long as your braces are on. Some people choose to do it anyways. That's only if they're too impatient to wait until your braces come off. It all depends on how bad your teeth are. If they're really bad, then you would have to have them on longer than normal. That's when people start getting really frustrated and impatient because they want to be able to eat the foods that they are not supposed to have.

You do have to have your braces tightened once a month after they are on. It will hurt, but all you have to do is take the same medicine you take to get rid of headaches and your pain will be gone. If you do that, the pain won't last very long. What some people do is they like to put pressure on their teeth to make them hurt more. It sounds crazy but to some people it makes them feel better.

The really cool thing about having braces put on is that you get to choose the color of your bands. You might want to do orange and black for Halloween or red and green for Christmas or pink and white for Easter. You might even just like to change it to your favorite colors. It makes your mouth feel all colorful inside and you get to show them off to your friends.

Depending on how bad your teeth are, an orthodontist might be likely to give you a head gear to wear at night. No one has to see you in it except for you because you definitely would not want to go around school wearing something like that. It will just make you feel even more self conscious then you already do.
