How to Beat the Winter Blues by Learning to Whittle Wood

Wow! Soon we will be right in the very cold times of winter, and I love it! Is that how you feel about winter too? If you answered no, then don't feel bad because your thinking is like that of most people. Now don't get me wrong, I love the spring, summer and fall, because I love to do a lot of walking, and when it's 20 degrees and windy, it makes walking pretty tough, but I still do it, because I know how easy it is to gain winter fat, and become a victim to the winter blues. Even though its cold, I love the beauty of the snow and the winter scenery while walking.

Now, most folks are outside in the summer, they are mowing the grass, fishing, playing games, cleaning the deck, or having barbecues with family and friends. In the winter it is a fact that for a lot of people to find themselves stuck inside in the cold winter months. Being stuck inside in the winter for a long period of time, it's easy to become a victim of the winter blues.

Now, here's an activity that can be done by anyone, that's 18 years old or older, I am sure it can be done also by those that are younger, but a parent or guardian would have to take responsibility for his or her child, and the activity I am talking about is, learning to whittle wood.

Unlike wood carving, whittling requires no skills, in fact if you can hold a small sharp knife and peel an apple or potato with it, then you are in a sense, whittling, but instead of whittling wood your whittling a potato or apple. Carving is not what I am talking about in this article, carving is making a piece of wood or other object like a bar of soap or some other material, into a recognized object, such as turning the block of wood into a highly detailed duck, or turning the bar of soap into a boat, or some other object.

To learn to whittle wood, all you need is some nice branch or block of wood, find some type of wood that you can easily carve, but one that doesn't seem to split or splinter too easily. You will need a small and sharp knife that's sturdy with a tight blade, one that you can hold tightly and is secure in your hand while your shaping the wood. Just start cutting away, and if you don't have a specific shape or idea of what you wan to make, don't worry, just whittle away. If you find yourself making designs or shaping the wood into something, that's great, if not just whittle away, and have fun, because you found a new way to beat the winter blues.
