Gas Grilling

By far the most popular type of outdoor grill in the UK is the type that uses charcoal as a heat source. However, if you’re more serious about outdoor grilling, you’ll probably already be aware that there are several advantages to barbeques that use propane or natural gas as their source of heat. Not only are they easier to control and keep clean, they are also a lot healthier due to the comparative lack of harmful emissions when compared to charcoal burning grills. Whatever type of barbeque you are using, there are a number of steps that you should follow if you are going to get the best, and safest, performance from your outdoor grill:

Place the grill on a heatproof surface far away from buildings, overhanging trees, or foliage.

Don’t be tempted to grill indoors, even in an open garage, as it is too much of a fire risk.

Make sure that the racks are clean, the cover fits snugly, and that the grill pan doesn’t have any fissures or holes in it.

Always clean your grill before you light it, and get rid of any old ash, which can rust the grill pan if it comes in contact with water.

Follow the instructions for lighting your grill to the letter, as you may risk damaging your grill if you don’t.

Gas grills use something known as lava rocks as a secondary heating element.

These look, and behave, a little like charcoal, but the two are far from interchangeable.Unlike charcoal, lava rocks can be used several times before they need to be replaced.

The rocks are used to retain the heat energy given out by the gas flame, and do not catch light as such. You need to keep these rocks clean if you want to avoid flare-ups caused by grease getting stuck to the rock and then catching fire, which can burn the food.Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning or replacing the lava rocks.

Turn and rearrange the lava rocks every so often to ensure even heating and cleaning. If lava rocks look unclean and start to break apart, it is time to replace them.

Don’t stack lava rocks, or they will trap grease and catch fire more frequently.

After you’ve finished all your grilling for the day, turn up the gas burner to full power for five minutes or so to burn off any grease and drippings from the lava rocks.
