The Three Dan Tiens

The phrase 'Dan Tien' can be translated as Field of Elixir. They are an important part of Tai Chi practice. The Dan Tiens can be thought of as gateways in the body. Energy can pass through them from one part of the body to another as well as from one aspect of the body to another. For example, energy can pass through them from a spiritual state to a physical state or from an emotional state to a physical state. It is also possible to use them to focus specific kinds of energy.

The Lower Dan Tien is located in the belly just slightly below the navel. Some karate practitioners call it the Hara or Tanden. It is the center of gravity of the body. It is also a place where chi or energy can be stored. Many people think of it as a pool of energy. Although it is not the body's only storage point for energy, it is a major one.

The Upper Dan Tien is located between the eyes and just a little bit up on the forehead. It is sometimes called the third eye. It is the spiritual and intellectual center of the body. It is the gateway through which it is possible to see into spiritual matters. A Qigong practitioner can scan the body of a patient through it. The spirit of a well-trained practitioner can actually move through it as in astral travel. You may be able to see Qi/Chi energy through it. It can also be used to focus intellectual or spiritual intent called Yi or I intent. In a combat situation, it can be used to sense the intent of an opponent.

The Middle Dan Tien is located the the center of the chest where a lot of people think the heart is located. It is the emotional center of the body. It is possible to focus emotional intent or shen intent through it.

Tai Chi practitioners use a kind of training called 3 Powers training. The three powers involved are heaven earth and man. 3 Powers training involves working with heaven energy through the Upper Dan Tien and earth energy through the Lower Dan Tien. Next these energies are allowed to combine in the Middle Dan Tien. The reason you do this is to build up your own energy. You have to let the energy combine in order to make it truly yours. Otherwise, the energy remains heaven energy or earth energy. It is much the same as when you eat. You must digest your food the energy from it can truly become yours.

The Dan Tiens are also important at a more basic level of Tai Chi training. When practicing the Tai Chi set, it is important to pay attention to the alignment of the Dan Tiens. This helps to develop energy flow and contributes to the health benefits of Tai Chi. Later on, it can help to develop the power behind many of the jings and combat moves used in more advanced Tai Chi skills.
