Manic depression disorder can be defined by the experience of one or more episodes of abnormal energy levels, cognition, and mood with or without one or more depressive episodes.

Genetic factors as well as environmental factors can contribute to the chance of developing the manic depression disorder.

Manic depression disorder has the characteristic of what is called mania. Mania is generally characterized by a distinct period of an elevated mood. This can often include an increase in energy and a decreased need for sleep. Another clue is when a person's attention span is low and can be easily distracted. Judgment and behavior is often impaired and abnormal.

Normal people swing from happiness to sadness and back again depending on the circumstances in life. What differentiates normal behavior from manic depression disorder illness is the intensity of these swings. The symptoms of manic depression disorder usually occur sometime in the late adolescent years.

Bipolar disorder is often be treated with mood stabilizing medications and other psychiatric drugs. Psychotherapy can also have a role.

Exercise and thought play an important role. Stress relief can come from exercise which can help improve mood and attitude. If you're feeling the effects of depression, get up and take a walk, or start a regular exercise routine.

Thoughts are also important for dealing with depression, as you should try to live in the moment and think positively. Whenever you find yourself drifting into thoughts of self-doubt, gently guide your thoughts to something more pleasant.

Also associate with happy and positive people. The more you associate with more cheerful friends and family, the less chance you have of feeling down. So spend time with people you enjoy as often as possible.

The best course of action for staying healthy is regular doctor visits and medical treatment if required. A healthy lifestyle is important by eating healthy, getting regular exercise and not smoking.
