Training your dog is important. It's important for his safety, your safety, the safety of your property and home, and the safety of other people that come in contact with your dog. Since this is so important, you definitely want to make sure that you do it the right way. Some people find themselves a bit overwhelmed when it comes to training their dog. Just a few of the things your dog should be trained in includes potty training, crate training, and obedience training. Training your dog in a positive way is important and it works better than using negative punishment to train the dog. To help you as you train your dog, here are a few important tips to remember that will make it easier for you.

Tip #1 - Use Consistency and Patience

The first tip to remember when you are training your dog is to make sure that you use consistency and patience. Not every dog learns at the same pace, so you need to have patience with the dog. You need to be consistent as well with your training or you will end up confusing your dog. These two things will help you train your dog successfully.

Tip #2 - Keep it Positive

Of course, you need to make sure that you keep the training positive. Punishing your dog doesn't work as well as using positive reinforcement. The best way to train your dog is to reward behavior that is good. While dogs that are more aggressive may need to be scolded or be reminded of behavior that is unacceptable with a loud noise, this should only be used from time to time or it may end up causing a problem while you are trying to train your dog.

Tip #3 - Use What Works for Your Dog

Remember that all dogs are different and there are many great training methods out there. It is best to find out what works for your dog and then use that technique. Often this can differ depending on the breed you are trying to train. In fact, you may want to do a bit of research on the breed of dog you are trying to train. Often dogs have some traits that come naturally that you can use to help train your dog and some may cause you problems too.

Tip #4 - Never Ignore Problems in Behavior

You should never ignore problems in behavior when you are training your dog. Even if you are training a younger dog, you cannot allow bad behavior to slip by or this will become a habit with your dog. Usually with a bit of work and planning you can stop the bad behavior before it becomes a habit. Remember, it's never too early to begin training a dog.

Tip #5 - Make Training Fun

One of the best tips when training a dog is to make sure that you make it fun. It should be fun for your dog and fun for you as well. Make a special time of day training time. Don't allow the training time to be too long either or your dog won't remember and will lose interest. Usually about 20-30 minutes is about perfect for a training session. Go with a time when your dog is calm and then use methods that keep your dog engaged and having a good time with you.
