Weight seems to be a struggle for just about anyone, and that is true in the world of dogs. In fact, more and more dogs are being diagnosed as overweight if not obese. The truth is that different breeds of dogs have different ideal weights that are based on their frame and breed. However, more and more dogs are going above and beyond the normal weight limit for their breed. This can be difficult for owners to accept, but you need to realize that if your dog is overweight you may be severely compromising their health, comfort level, and life expectancy.

Many dogs' are gaining excess weight today because they are not getting the exercise that they need and the food that they are being fed is coming directly from the dinner table in large quantities. Many pet owners feel that food is love, but the truth is that type of love may be killing your prized pooch. Instead, with a few simple changes you can get your dog's health and weight back in shape.

If you have decided that your dog needs to drop some pounds you will want to cut out some of the barbs in their diet. Carbohydrates are essentially sugars and they can pack on the pounds in your pup. Instead, look for a low carb dog food that you can use as your dog's main food choice.

Additionally, since your dog is a carnivore you may want to ensure that you are largely feeding him lean proteins. Protein is what their system needs to survive so steer clear of high carb foods and instead choose those that are high in protein. You may want to look at substituting one of your dog's meals with a yogurt or cottage cheese. These both have protein to them, but less fat and carbohydrates.

You must limit the amount of food that you are giving your dog throughout the day. Ideally you should be giving your dog two meals a day. One of these should be given in the morning and one in the evening. Do not completely eliminate a meal, but do limit the portion size that you are giving your dog.

One of the hardest things to stick to is refraining from giving your dog table scraps or excessive treats throughout the day. However, more often than not these things are what led to your dog's weight gain. Instead, you need to be diligent in keeping your scraps in the garbage. Additionally, let your friends and family know about this policy. Be sure that they know how serious it is so that everyone can be dedicated to increasing your dog's health.

Finally, exercise is essential for any dog who is trying to lose weight. Be sure that you are getting your dog out and moving. Start gradually, and slowly increase the amount of activity that your dog is engaging in. If you do this your dog will soon be looking svelte and shapely. Additionally, his overall health will dramatically improve leading to many happy years to come!
