Although Swedish massage and deep tissue massage share many common qualities and are both very popular, they should not be thought of as interchangeable with one another. These two styles of massage are very different, each with its own unique background and methods. Here is a little more information to help you understand the difference between these two common massage techniques.

Swedish Massage:

If you've ever gotten a massage at a spa, you've probably gotten a Swedish massage, or at least seen this type of massage as one of the available options. It is probably the most popular style of massage in the West, known for its firm pressure, gentle but effective technique and intense work on the muscles. The masseuse uses various gliding strokes, muscle kneading techniques and rhythmic taps on the body. There are many benefits to getting a Swedish massage, such as improved muscle flexibility, enhanced blood circulation and eased tension throughout the body. Many people swear by Swedish massage, and if you've never gotten a professional massage before, this is a great place to start.

Deep Tissue Massage

While deep tissue massage shares some stroke techniques and gliding movements with Swedish massage, there are many differences that make this style of massage completely unique. A deep tissue massage will work on deeper layers of muscle, tissue structures and connective tissue than a traditional Swedish massage, which is fairly gentle. The masseuse applies much more pressure than he or she would with a Swedish massage, and the movements are more focused on specific areas for longer periods of time. The benefits include release of chronic adhesions, knots and muscle tension.

Which Should You Choose?

If you're not sure whether to go for a Swedish massage or a deep tissue massage, consider your most pressing needs, both physical and mental. If you need help increasing your blood and oxygen flow, relaxing, releasing toxins, enhancing muscle recovery from workouts and increasing the pliability of your muscles, without overworking your heart or feeling the burn, Swedish massage may be ideal for you. If you have chronic muscle problems, spasms, tension or ongoing pain due to injuries and/or stress from overuse, deep tissue massage might be more appropriate. And, of course, whether you choose Swedish or deep tissue massage, it's always crucial to work with a masseuse with whom you feel comfortable. Then you can truly relax and let go.
