If you've ever considered going into law, a career as a tax attorney is one of the options you may want to consider more deeply. As a tax attorney, you would have a stable job with one of many varieties of employer.

The job of a tax attorney is sometimes complex and adversarial, but in many instances, it is calmer than you might believe. The services of these specialized attorneys are required when businesses want to make the most of their available tax deductions and when new businesses are being formed, for example.

Tax attorneys may provide services for following types of clients:

Businesses: Tax attorneys often work for private companies. They assist with planning and legal counsel in order to ensure an efficient structure for payroll and business taxes, as well as the lowest tax rate possible.

Estate Issues: When people inherit money or receive large gifts within their family, they must often consult with a tax attorney to deal with inheritance or gift taxes.

IRS: The Internal Revenue Service is a government agency that hires tax attorneys to help collect taxes from non-payers and assist with legal proceedings.

Individuals: While some tax attorneys may work for individuals simply because of their wealth and noteworthiness, most tax attorneys who work for individuals are dealing with IRS collections of back taxes.

Nonprofit Organizations: Just like businesses, nonprofit organizations also require the services of tax attorneys. They don't necessarily need help paying taxes, though. Instead, they require assistance in maintaining their tax-free status by complying with local, state and federal laws.

Trusts: Tax attorneys offer opinions and help prepare transactions for trusts, usually regarding tax liability.

In order to become a tax attorney, you must have a law degree. Most prestigious employers want to see that their lawyers went to one of the top law schools, as well. Getting into such an esteemed school typically requires a bachelor's degree in a related field, along with a high GPA, from an accredited and respectable college or university. Once in law school, you will need to specialize in tax law. Your educational experience can also be enriched with an internship at a respectable law firm. And then, of course, you will need to take and pass the American Bar Association exam. After that, you will have many job opportunities waiting for you in the field of tax law.
