New pets are great when you first get them, but it's important to remember that animals need attention and love. Like they say dogs are for life not just for Christmas. A puppy can bring lots of happy memories and times but they have a lot of training and work involved to, they are not all fun and no work!
Not only does a puppy's temperament depend on how it was reared but also by what breed of dog it is. Bulldogs, Boxers and German Shepherds are all very protective due to their guard-dog upbringings. Border and Bearded collies are natural herding dogs with tons of energy so the are great dogs for a farm (Since these animals were raised on a farm they will not be used to certain things such as loud noises or other modern day things we take for granted). Labradors and pointers are hunting dogs, so hide and seek games are their favorite. These are simply guidelines for dogs, however, so keep in mind that like people, each dog has his or her own unique personality.

Dependent on the amount of time and attention invested, puppy dog training is achievable. This doesn't have to be an endlessly grueling training process because you can actually get good results with sessions that only last a few minutes at a time. The first thing you need to train your new puppy in is obedience, commands like sit, come, heel, stay and fetch are basic enough for them to learn. As your dog ages, it is acceptable to start practicing commands such as play dead, roll over and paw. A young puppy is nothing more than a blank slate, so it will be very easy to train him or her to be obedient at an early age. The things that you train to your dog will stick with him for his entire life, but because reminders will be necessary for your pet, remember to take a few minutes each day to practice commands and tricks.
There are good reasons to train a puppy early. He will use your home as a toilet, for example, and your furniture may suffer with holes from his digging and biting. Puppies are not born knowing the difference between right and wrong, so you must teach them what you expect of them.
There's a huge variety of training materials out there these days, but really, as long as you are willing to put in the needed time and effort you can train your dog quite well without them. Training a dog can take a decent amount of time, perhaps a few months, but can be very rewarding. Also remember to keep up on the lessons learned daily to prevent a decline in knowledge in your pet.
