Not only are you training your dog you are socializing him to which of course is the next step after sit, stay and come. Treats work well for obedience training, when the dog does something good it is rewarded. Yelling at your dog is counterproductive, it scares him and you want to maintain a good relationship.
When teaching your dog obedience try and teach him away from distractions like his toys, take him to an empty field or park where there aren't any people, only you and him. Tell your dog in a firm but warm voice to "sit," and then put your hand on his backside and push it lightly down to the ground; once he's seated, you reward him with a pet treat and congratulate him by saying, "good boy!" Repetition reinforced with a reward for positive behavior will help him realize what you mean.
Getting him to stay is another matter, you'll probably need another person for that.
Make him sit (upon learning how) and get a friend to hold him. When you walk way from your dog and want him to stay hold your hand firmly up in the air (In future when you hold up your hand he should realize that he has to stay without your shouting at him to stay) then give it a few seconds and let your friend release him, when he comes to you make him sit and tell him how clever he is!
