Is there such a creature as a dog that doesn t like to gnaw on bones? Doubtfully! Yes, dogs possess an evolutionary trait that instills in them a love for chewing on bones. Since human beings have the evolutionary trait of ingenuity, they have developed such items as rawhide bones for their dogs to enjoy. These rawhide bones will give the pet something to chew other than its dog clothes and the household furniture! Of course, there are other reasons why providing a dog with a good rawhide bone is recommended.

The Benefits of Rawhide Bones

Rawhide bones can greatly aid in improving a dog s dental hygiene. Since dogs cannot brush their teeth they need to chew on things to help maintain them. Chewing on rawhide bones dramatically reduces tarter and plaque which increases the odds of the teeth being free of cavities and other dental issues.

Rawhide bones keep the dog from chewing on other things. If the dog has a desire to chew on something, it will do so. If it doesn’t have a rawhide bone, the dog will end up chewing on furniture or, worse, something that presents a choking hazard.

There is also a psychological benefit with a dog chewing on rawhide. Mainly, it can help alleviate any boredom the dog may feel. Some may wonder what problems could derive from boredom. Well, if the dog seeks to entertain itself it may end up wrecking a little havoc such as jumping or furniture or bothering its owner. So, presenting the dog with a rawhide bone will keep it safely occupied and content.

The Safety of Rawhide Bones

Of course, come owners may have concerns about the safety of rawhide bones. This is understandable and no owner would wish to give their loving pet something that could prove harmful. Thankfully, rawhide bones are particularly safe to chew on for adult dogs. Puppies, on the other hand, should not be given a rawhide bone since they may not be able to digest any pieces that come off of the bones.

Now, some may opt to give their dog an actual bone from the dinner table. This is never a good idea. Bones from food items often present a choking hazard and that s why they should be avoided at all costs. Then, there is also the issue of digestive problems. While pop culture has always put forth the image of a dog eating a meat bone, the fact remains that most dogs will suffer stomach distress from them. That is why sticking with rawhide bones is a much more preferable.

Picking the Right Bone

Just as there are many different types of dogs, there will be many different types of rawhide bones to choose from. Picking the right bone will ensure that your dog will be more inclined to chew on it. When it comes to selecting a rawhide bone, be sure to pick a bone that is the right size and texture for the dog. It also wouldn t hurt to pick a flavor that your dog will greatly enjoy.
