Graphic designers once used pens and boards - now replaced by tablet and stylus. Designers today are at the mercy of their ever-changing software suites. The comes a point when the designer is forced to choose between upgrading or migrating to another software. And, then the designer must learn all the new functions of this version of software. If the software changes, the requirements to relearn can be costly for design professionals. And on top of all that, there are numerous different graphic programs available for illustration, desktop publishing, photography and web design.

Quark Express was at the top of the desktop publishing arena for much of the last decade. Recently Adobe has made an aggressive attempt to regain its former dominance of the desktop publishing industry. Adobe has already swallowed up Macromedia and much of its other competition, and will pretty much have a monopoly on graphic design software if it squashes Quark.

In 2005 Abode obtained Dreamweaver after it bought Macromedia. Dreamweaver is widely recognized as both the best and most challenging web development applications Dreamweaver is perhaps the premier software used by professional designers of web sites. Microsoft Front Page still offers services for non-professionals as well as a few pros who are old-time PC users. Mostly though, Adobe, with the acquisition of Dreamweaver, has attained a semi-monopoly here as well.

Adobe Photoshop is definitely at the head of the pack when it comes to photo editing software. A lot of design programs exist for your computer and for the user, it is always important to know about these graphic design programs. Some companies will only produce plug-ins for Photoshop, until Adobe is forced to buy them.

What about graphic design software for illustration? Once again, Adobe comes out ahead with Adobe Illustrator which is recognized and used by most professionals and generally wins hands down against it's competitors. It is not always, the easiest to use program or the program which has the most functions. It is which one is the most compatible in the most places. A Canadian competitor, Corel Draw, is known to be a great program with more functions, however, the files are hard to transfer to other programs and can only be used with Corel. That means the program only has limited functionality and so is less popular.

One of the main reasons InDesign is gaining ground quickly is because of the ease of use it has with all the other programs within the Adobe design family. It's a rapid, smooth transition between one and the other. They are now being sold by Adobe as a package called Creative Suite.
