Graphics Designer Software Programs - A Look Into The Diverse Alternatives Accessible

Graphic designers once used pens and boards - now replaced by tablet and stylus. Many designers rely on specialized graphic design software that is often very costly and rapidly changing. The comes a point when the designer is forced to choose between upgrading or migrating to another software. And, the designer needs to understand how this new type of software functions. Design professionals may need expensive retraining when the program interface gets changed. On top of all that, there are alternate graphic design software programs for web design, photography, desktop publishing and illustration.

Quark Express was at the top of the desktop publishing arena for much of the last decade. Over the past few years, Adobe has been making a serious bid to regain its preeminence in desktop publishing with In Design. Adobe has already swallowed up Macromedia and much of its other competition, and will pretty much have a monopoly on graphic design software if it squashes Quark.

At the end of 2005, Adobe concluded its acquisition of Macromedia which made it the owner of Dreamweaver - usually acclaimed as one of the best and sometimes the most difficult to use web design software available. Dreamweaver has few challengers in the arena of professional web design. Microsoft's Front Page still provides services for non-professionals and some professionals who are old-time PC users. Although, Adobe, with the Dreamweaver application, has gained a semi-monopoly in this area also.

Adobe Photoshop is the clear forerunner in graphic design software for photographers. Lay people can settle for lesser known programs but as far as professionals are concerned, Photoshop is the best program to go with. Other companies exist by producing "plug-in's for Photoshop, until Adobe buys them.

What about graphic design software for illustration? Remember, Adobe is the leader, with Adobe Illustrator being highly regarded by a vast number of professionals it usually wins hands down against other software in the sector. And, it's not always which program is the easiest to use or has the most functions. You should look for the greatest overall compatibility. A Canadian competitor, Corel Draw, is known to be a great program with more functions, however, the files are hard to transfer to other programs and can only be used with Corel. That means the program only has limited functionality and so is less popular.

One reason InDesign is making up so much ground is through the ease of use with all the other graphic design programs in the Adobe family. It's a rapid, smooth transition between one and the other. Adobe now has all it's programs together as a "Creative Suite" which makes it easy for one-stop shopping.
