Five Advantages Of Using Rechargeable Batteries

UNIROSS that is a European leader in manufacturing rechargeable batteries has recently announced the results of the first world's unprejudiced researches in terms of the environmental influence of disposable batteries in comparison with rechargeable batteries. So, according to the results, with the same quantity of energy produced, rechargeable batteries influence the environment to thrity-two times less than disposable batteries. So, it's necessary to transform from disposable batteries to rechargeable ones as Peter Keen, MD of UNIROSS, has stressed.

According to the data given by UNIROSS about 660 million batteries are bought each year in the United Kingdom 95 percent of which are disposable. All of these batteries are heading directly to landfill releasing a great amount of harmful chemicals into the environment. Colin Butfield, Head of Campaigns at WWF-UK emphasizes that it's extremely wasteful. He says that an average person in the UK lives as if we have three planets full of resources. However, rechargeable batteries are less harmful as they have 28 times less influence on the earth's climate change in comparison with disposable batteries. And the usage of rechargeable batteries won't reduce people's standard of life. So, aren't they worth usage?

1. The research has shown that for the same amount of energy produced, rechargeable batteries offer twenty-three times less influence on non-renewable natural resources.

Besides, rechargeable batteries consume twenty-three times less non-renewable natural resources including fossil and minerals in comparison with disposable batteries. It means that much more disposable batteries must be produced to offer the same amount of energy.

2. Rechargeable batteries have up to twenty-eight times less influence on global warming.

Climate change presupposes a rise of the average temperature of the planet's surface that results from an increase of the greenhouse gas effect. However, rechargeable batteries offer twenty-eight times less influence on climate warming in comparison with disposable batteries. This ratio is explained by the influence caused by the production process of the disposable batteries and their distributing.

3. Rechargeable batteries have up to thirty times less influence on air pollution (ozone pollution)

Photochemical oxidation deals with the peaks of ozone and toxic emissions. Rechargeable batteries offer thirty times less influence on ozone pollution in comparison with disposable batteries.

4. Rechargeable batteries have up to nine times less influence on air acidification

The air acidification index includes acidifying substances in the atmosphere particles. During the rain these acidifying substances pollute all ecosystems. Rechargeable batteries offer nine times less influence on air acidification in comparison with disposable batteries.

5. Rechargeable batteries have up to twelve times less influence on water pollution

The specially created sedimentary eco-toxicity indicator demonstrates possible toxic risks that can be caused by the emission of chemicals into water ecosystems.

Offering the same quantity of energy, rechargeable batteries have up to twelve times less possible toxic risks for fresh water and sea water sediments in comparison with disposable batteries.

Extra Advantage: Less Wastes

The research involved the list of raw materials needed for both types of batteries and resulted in the following results. The usage of rechargeable batteries offers true savings on packaging wastes, as one pack of rechargeable batteries is necessary to get 1kWh of energy in comparison with ninety-three packs of disposable batteries.
