Moradabad is one of the most industrially flourishing cities in India. It was set up by Prince Murad in 1600 AD and hence it is called Moradabad. It is made up of two words, "Murad" and "Abad".Murad is the name of the Prince and Abad means setting up.So the city which is set up by Prince Murad is Moradabad.

Moradabad is situated on the banks of River Ram-Ganga which is a tributary of the Holy Ganges. The city is located at a distance of 167 kilometers from the Indian National Capital i.e.New Delhi. The city has passed through the hands of various dynasties.

But over the years, it has gained fame for its distinct brassware industry. It is said that Mohammad Yar Khan was the founder of this industry who had come to this place from Afghanistan in 1860 and started the brassware manufacturing unit.

Moradabad is known for its ornamental brassware the world over.It has the distinction of being the biggest exporter of brassware in the country. The city is one of the potential cities for innumerable business opportunities and forms a large center of trade in India. The brassware is exported to North America, and Europe.Due to the high level of manufacturing of brass ware in the town, Moradabad is often referred to as the Peetal Nagri meaning the Brass City.

Brassware is extensively produced in the town. But there are some families which are engaged in making ornamental brassware which is sometimes plated with Lac or tin.The utensils are then engraved with intricate designs as per the demand of the clients.

There is a great range of products available in Moradabad. One can choose anything from a brass utensil to the most exquisite decorative items. The utensils mostly comprise of mostly wares which are used for various rituals. These can include the Lota (Water Pot), Panchapatra (Ritual Plate), Simhasan or the seat used for placing the deity and also the Kanchanthaal (Flower Plate).

But the product which has put Moradabad on the global platform is definitely the Art Metal work. The tradition of metal work started during the Mughal period and still remains a thriving industry.Art Metalwork is a must buy for people visiting this vibrant city. There is a great demand for the colored enameling and intricate engravings on the metal wares.

The art metal wares include different products like busts, decorative gift articles, clocks, statues and utensils.Metal wares designed and developed on the Mughal art and depicting those times are in greater demand in the countries out of India. These include the Itardan(Perfume Spray), Gulabpash(Rosewater Sprinkler), Aftab (Wine or Sherbet Servers) and the famous Hookah.

The reason they are being asked for so much lies in the intricate and beautiful embroidery they have. These are very heavily embroidered which are one of the finest in the world and have an extensive range of patterns.

Apart from the Brassware industry, Moradabad also excels in other handicraft industries. Most prominent among these is the Jewelry made out of horns and bones, kitchen ware/utensils, combs and wooden sticks.

The manufacturing industry in Moradabad is also set up in some of the homes and these ancillary units help the bigger players in the market.Even though the industrial activity in the city is a flourishing one, yet it is still too much labor oriented.

But in spite of it all, the Brassware Industry in Moradabad is a must see on the itinerary of people visiting Uttar Pradesh.
