Commercial printing is a kind of business that is profitable but needs a big capitalization in order for you to be able to start it. That is because being a commercial printer means that you have the equipment and machinery need to operate. And since these equipment and machines take up space, you will need to rent a big commercial space to make your business running. Below are some of the things that you need to spend at the onset of your commercial printing business. The size of the business you will start will depend on the capitalization that you will be able to shell out. You might need to apply for a business loan in order to start a full service printing company.
These two main areas below will eat up a sizable portion of your capitalization.

1. The Printing Equipment. Since you are going to start a printing company, you will of course need commercial printing presses. This will be at the core of your operations. You can choose to go either offset or digital printing. You need to know that offset machines are quite cheaper than their digital counterparts but many companies now prefer digital printers so that they can take online orders.
Of course, the prices of the printing equipment vary depending on their type and the features included. Just to give you an idea, a single unit of a digital commercial printer can be anywhere around or above $13,000. That is only for a single unit. You can start with one and just add printing equipment as the need arises.
Part of the equipment that you will need is computers and laser printers for the office and for the layout department so that they can print proofs for the clients to check and then approve for printing.
2. The Office Space. You will need to rent a commercial space for your printing business that will house your reception or sales office, the layout department, and the printing and finishing department. Depending on how many equipment you need to purchase for your start up business and the number of people you are going to hire, you have to compute how big a space you need. This will also include the storage room for your supplies. The current national average for commercial space rental is around $18 per square foot. So just do the math depending on how the space that you need. In most cases, you will need to pay an advance of one month and a six-month deposit on the space. That will mean an awful lot of money that will just be stagnant. But that is just how it is. If ever, you can just negotiate with your landlord so that he will lessen the number of months for deposit.
Commercial printing can be a really profitable big business but it also needs tremendous capital to start. It would be great to have at least $300,000 in order to start with a full-service printing business. But if not, you can start small as a commercial printer and just build it up according to the demand. Just remember to keep on selling your services and saving your income so that you can pay your loans and buy new equipment as soon as you can in order to cater to the demands of printing.
