Every region has its own identity in terms of food, clothing and cultural traditions.Texas has been influenced by multiple cultures which has given it a very distinctive form. This also goes for the culinary traditions in the region.

Texas has been majorly influenced by the Mexican culture. This rings true of the food culture too. Texas is mainly known for four kinds of food, namely chili, chicken fried steak, TexMex and the barbeque. Each of these foods has some special quality but the most interesting one seems to be the TexMex.It is used to describe a regional cuisine that is a fine blend of American as well as the Mexican cuisines. This term is commonly used all over the place and at times also connotes the Mexican counterpart of the same.Tex-Mex is cheesier, has more beef content and includes enchiladas, nachos and burritos.

Since the 15th century, Texas has been under the rule of Spain, France, Mexico and the present day United States of America.Prior to that, it was the Native Americans who had ownership of the land and had a deep influence on the culinary culture of the region. After the Spaniards entered the fray, they brought Afro-American slaves with them which again lent a very different impact on the food habits if the people. The travelling Cowboys and their chuck wagons also brought along a line of delicacies from the different parts of the land.

All this has helped the Texas culinary culture to grow and prosper in multiple ways. The region has many places which are worth going for a pleasant and an enjoyable vacation. There are numerous attractions which lend their own value to the place. One of the places which are a must see for the visitors to Texas is a place called Greenville, which is located less than 45 minutes east of Dallas. It offers a quiet country charm and scope for outdoor recreation. It also has a rich cultural heritage.

In the midst of this charming town, exists a more unique store which goes by the name of Mary Puddin Hill Store. It is run by Mary and Sam Lauderdale for the past four decades and a half. The name of the confectionary finds its origin in the tale which is much talked about. It is said that the name Mary Puddin Hill was given to the area by James Horton. As the tale goes, it is said that Mary Horton had remarked upon arriving in the area and walking through the mud that it feels like we are walking through the puddin. And so James Horton named the area Mary Puddin Hill.

Mary of Puddin Hill Pecan Fruit Cake is the most popular and in demand confection of the store. The recipe of this cake has not been altered at all in all these years. It is still made with plenty of nuts, cherries, pineapple and dates with just the right amount of batter to hold all the ingredients together. There are no additives and preservatives added to it.
