There're as many dog collars as many breeds of dogs. Thus, you may find leather collars, nylon or fabric collars. There're also designer collars with sling and many others. You may find special types of collars designed for training dogs, as well as fancy or colorful collars used for expressing your dog's character. What type of dog collar do I need, you may ask? Well, consider the following factors at first. Do you want a collar and leash for your puppy? Are you going to train your dog? Is your dog stubborn or does it have any other behavioral problems? As you can see, there're lots of dog collars as well as their designs.
Chain slip collars have name of "choke collars" and are designed for teaching a dog to walk on a leash and heel. Those collars offer some limitations necessary for effective training. The dog pull on the leash all the time needs the choke collar as it tightens and disciplines the dog. Use this collar correctly by holding both ends of the collar with two large rings at either end. Then slide the chain through one large ring until the large rings touch each other and put your hand through the loop in the chain and pull downward on the empty ring, making the chain look like the letter P. It's the way to put the collar on the dog. Fix a leash to the empty ring. The collar should tighten if you pull the leash and loosen when released. In order to correct your dog, pull quickly on the collar. You're expected to hear a zip sound that will attract your dog's attention. Soon you dog will be disciplined. Nevertheless, chain use slip collars with much caution and don't leave it on your dog when it's left without your attention.

Larger dogs having thick necks require the usage of a metal prong collar called a pinch collar. It's inconvenient for dogs who like to pull on the leash. The prong collar acts in the same manner as the choke collar but offers more control while the dog's being trained. The prong collar may have a look that may hurt your dog, but it's completely safe. The prongs aren't sharp and won't damage the skin. Metal prong collars also require much caution and shouldn't be left on your dog without your presence.
There're many improvements in head collars or head halters for dogs even though they may resemble muzzles. But such collars won't prevent your dog from eating, drinking or barking. Head collars have one loop covering the dog's muzzle and a second loop is around the dog's neck. This type of collar is good for training because it limits head movement and prevents pulling. When the dog pulls on the leash, the halter makes the head turn that seems extremely uncomfortable for the dog. It should be emphasized that head halters shouldn't be left on dogs without attention.
