What's the difference between LVT, RVT, CVT and other veterinary job designations? For the uninitiated, these different descriptions may sound like nothing more than meaningless letters. But basically, these are all different variations of the veterinary technician. LVT is short for Licensed Veterinary Technician; RVT is short for Registered Veterinary Technician; and CVT is short for Certified Veterinary Technician. These technicians have completed various licensing, registration and/or certification requirements to prove their skills and technical abilities related to this profession.
The Job Duties of LVTs, RVTs and CVTs
As a veterinary technician, your job duties may vary depending on what type of office that you work in and the veterinarian you work for; it may also depend on your professional designation. In general, a veterinary technician will be expected to fulfill responsibilities in the following basic areas:

* Applying stints and other protective devices
* Catheterizations, ear flushes, intravenous/tube feedings and other minor procedures
* Dressing wounds
* Hematology (the study of blood)
* Microbiology (the study of microscopic organisms and their effects)
* Performing skin scrapings
* Physical exams
* Radiologic procedures including x-rays and ultrasounds
* Serology (the study of blood serum and its constituents)
* Urinalysis (the analysis of the urine)
* Venipuncture (collecting blood specimens, giving shots, etc)
As a veterinary technician working in a veterinarian's office, you may also be required to do some administrative tasks outside of your responsibilities related to animal care. These tasks may involve answering phones, greeting patients and their owners, keeping records and maintaining inventories of equipment and supplies.
Where Vet Techs Work
Veterinary technicians, or vet techs, perform many different tasks as mentioned above. They also perform these tasks in a number of different environments-and not just in a private veterinarian's office that people take their dogs and cats to as one may imagine. Vet techs can find both clinical and technical work in places like animal shelters, research laboratories and zoos, for example. And besides the smaller, private veterinary clinics, there are also larger animal hospitals that veterinary techs can work at.
LVT vs. RVT vs. CVT
These different job classifications have to do with training and certification. A certificate or associate's degree followed by a licensing exam is required in pretty much every state. The credential awarded depends on the state you live in and the organization that grants the credential, but they all entail a minimum level of education and the passing of a professionally administered exam.
