Many people think that owning a dog is an easy thing to do. The truth is that there is a great responsibility that comes with being a pet owner. You are responsible for this living and breathing creature and you must see to their every need in order for them to survive and flourish. While this is not as hard as it sounds, it is a very important job to have.

There are certain precautions that you need to take when it comes to the safety of your dog and the first thing to take into consideration is where will your dog be when he is outdoors. Many people have fenced in yards but if this is not the case you cannot just let your dog run wild around the neighborhood. You will need to either have a fenced in area or a leash to walk your dog so he gets the exercise he needs and so he can do his business.

Some people prefer to use a dog kennel in their yard, which allows the dog to be outdoors, but in a limited space. This makes it a safe place for the dog to be in without the risk of him getting loose or bothering others in the yard. Others like to have a fenced in area for their pooch to have their own yard to roll around. This is good but can leave it open for your pooch to dig holes in the yard. It is a good idea to give your pet plenty of chew toys to keep in occupied so that he will not be tempted to dig up the yard when he gets bored.

Some dogs will dig in the dirty to find a cool place to lie and if you find that your dog is digging for a hole to lie in then you may need to rethink the area he is playing in to include a shaded area so he can get out of the sun. You can give your pet a doghouse if he is to be an outside dog just be sure to go outside and spend some quality time with your pet so he will not get lonely and feel neglected.

Be sure that your dog cannot get his collar caught on areas around the fence and he can end up seriously hurting himself. Chain link fences can be dangerous for dogs if you have a dog that likes to jump fences. It may be better to put up a wooden privacy fence so that he will not get himself hung up when he tries to make a jump for it.

It is a good idea to get you on your dog's level to see what he can get himself into. This will allow you to see things from your dog's perspective just as you would with a child. It can really help to save yourself from some sticky situations down the road and it will help to keep your dog as safe as possible.
