Best for the Best Man

When it comes to a wedding, although he can often be the centre of attention – even when we'd have it otherwise – the best man is often overlooked when it comes to giving out presents. He's planned the stag night; he's got the groom to the church; he's kept everyone entertained and kept an eye on the smooth running of the occasion – but whereas the bridesmaids get flowers and probably some token of affection the best man's loyalty and commitment to the groom often go unacknowledged. Tradition doesn't recognise best man gifts in the way it recognises wedding gifts and acknowledgements to other members of the wedding party.

token of appreciation for the best man doesn't have to be elaborate or overly expensive: it would be a very poor best man who expected to be rewarded for the honour of supporting a great friend on the most important day of his life. But even so, friendship, loyalty, and just delivering a speech that doesn't embarrass the groom (well, not too much) deserve a little something. Ideally, a groom's family should choose a gift for the best man that says something about the friendship between the best man and the groom. It should ideally be resilient, humorous, individual and unfaltering. Best man gifts should raise a smile in the giver and receiver at some private joke or meaning that only they understand. But most of all, any gift for a best man should not be over flashy, pretentious or embarrassingly grand. But neither should it be flippant, trashy or mocking. Of all the wedding gifts, the one given to the best man has a special significance because, other than the bride and groom, there will be few people who share as greater bond as the man who is getting married and the friend by his side.
