Actually, if you wish to get loyal customers using direct mail, you should work on the graphics in several ways. First of all, if you are placing captions around the picture, you should bear in mind that the captions should either by on the right hand side of the picture or below the picture. Actually if you have read books before you would also know that nearly no people would try to put the captions on the left of the images or above the images because it looks odd.
Besides, you should keep in mind that normally readers would try to flow according to the images. For example, if there is a picture showing a stream vertically, people would simply look at the image from the top and follow the stream to the bottom page of the mail. Therefore, you could make use of this special reading habit to put the information that you want your readers to read.
Secondly, you could think of ways to expand the content seen by the readers. In many of the cases found by scientists, the eyes of people would flow from the right to the left but they would stop at the left side for a while before they continue to read other parts of the mail. Therefore, if you could get the chance to deliver your message to your clients when their eyes stay at the left, you would have a better chance to making a business with them.
Of course, some experts in marketing would understand that the shape of the images provided to the clients would affect the interests of reading the materials too. Many people would prefer spherical, vertical images rather than horizontal ones. Apart from this, people would not want to read horizontal images at the beginning of the readership.
Therefore, if you want to deliver something in the mail first, you could try to use the circular shape of images to deliver the message and then use square areas for delivering something less important.
