Believe it or not, conservatories first gained popularity back in Victorian times, although not the double-glazed version we are used to today of course! Now coming back into fashion due to the elegance they offer over the PVC version, Victorian conservatories were made from hardwood. Most people choose to install a conservatory in order to gain extra space in their house, and they are often used as an extra living or dining room. Originally conceived as a 'sun room', the nature of a conservatory being built from glass does of course make them a warm room. Conservatories in Cornwall and the other southern counties are especially popular because they do actually get some sun to enjoy!
If you have the option to do so, it is important to think about which direction you want your conservatory to face. South-facing conservatories will get the most sun, but bear in mind that this will mean that they may get too hot in the summer! If you intend to use your conservatory mainly as a breakfast room, then east-facing is best, while west-facing is good if you want to grow plants in your conservatory. Apollo Conservatories are specialists in building conservatories in Cornwall and Devon and are highly experienced. Their hardwood conservatories in the south west can even be added to listed buildings and they will help and advise you through their Planned and Listed Building application service, as well as offering a free estimate and free architectural drawings.
