How Gas Provides Alternative Fuel Options To The Automotive Industry

Fuel that is burned by cars, buses and other vehicles contributes to pollutants that are released into the air and atmosphere. This accumulates in negative effects that are caused to the the wellbeing of the environment such as the reduction of the Ozone layer and polluted rainwater. More consumers are seeking out alternative fuel sources when they purchase a vehicle, and the automotive industry has been fulfilling this demand by converting to alternative fuel systems on vehicles that already use gasoline and diesel as a fuel supply. Alternative fuel options can include compressed natural gas [CNG], bi-fuel and liquefied petroleum gas [LPG] systems. These three fuel options help to reduce the carbon footprint and work toward a sustainable planet.

The Advantages to Alternative Fuel Options

Compressed Natural Gas [CNG]

CNG cylinders can be implemented to replace other fuel sources in the automotive industry. CNG releases less harmful greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. The systems are sealed, and this prevents any leakage or evaporation of harmful pollutants. Compressed natural gas systems are safe. The gas does not ignite as easily on hot surfaces. It also has a practical side; it increases the lifespan of lubricating oils, due to its ability to not contaminate or dilute the crankcase oil.

Bi-Fuel Vehicles

Bi-fuel vehicles have the ability to run on two different fueling systems, one being gasoline or diesel, and the other being an alternative fuel source, typically compressed natural gas. The two fuels are stored in separate tanks, and one source will be used and burned at a time. These vehicles have the ability to switch back and forth either automatically or manually. Common conversion features include:

• Lower Emissions

• Longer Engine Lifespan

• Longer Engine and Service Intervals

• Savings on Operation Costs

• Practically no Engine Modification Required

• Safe

When converting to a bi-fuel vehicle be sure that the company performing the conversion adheres to all NFPA's 52 standards on CNG conversions. All employees that are working on the conversion should be trained and certified by organizations such as NGVI, Swagelok and CSA America.

LPG as an Alternative Fueling System

Liquefied petroleum gas [LPG] is a low cost alternative fueling option that is available for conversion. LPG is derived from fossil fuels. It burns more cleanly than heavier molecular hydrocarbons and releases very few particulates when burnt. When it burns, it produces no soot, and very few sulfur emissions. LPG is synthesized by refining petroleum natural gas and it poses no ground or water pollutant hazards.

Converting Fueling Systems in the Automotive Industry

Green Alternative Systems [GAS] has been providing alternative fuel systems to the automotive industry since 2010. Their CNG, bi-fuel and LPG conversion systems have been tested and certified. Their CNG conversion system for the Ford E-450 6.8L is the only fuel system available that has successfully completed the comprehensive, 7 year/200 000 miles Altoona Cycle Test, with zero failures to the CNG system, or its components.
