The police of any country are primarily responsible for the internal security of the region, locality or country. They are utilized in managing crime in the community and look after the security of the citizens. To become a Police officer there are specified criteria to be followed.

1. You have to have passed school diploma or GED which is the essential level of degree for a law enforcement officer. You have the opportunity to study further after joining the police force. The course should be of your option and it is greater if it is related to the career.

2. Most important factor is you should have a good health and remain is shape all the time as you have to face many hazardous situations which may come in unwarranted. Frequent exercise to keep physically fit is vital. The physical compliance is the primary factor to get into the police force.

3. You have to apply at the police department for the post of officer providing the option of the place you prefer to work. All eligible applications are sent to the pool and are summoned for training as and when necessary. The applicants are then forwarded for training which involves fitness test, lie detector and drug tests along with a written test. The tests are to decide your competence of performing in the police force.

4. The training process is executed in the police academy which is definitely rough. The program may last for 12-14 weeks. The training is normally studying the police protocol and gaining the physical fitness to be enrolled into it. During study training you will be taught the police method and its performance with proper solution. The physical fitness course teaches the self defense tactics and use of different weapons.

5. Promotions: The students of the training curriculum are then brought in into the police department. With the perfect education and fitness the police force in USA has the facility for promotions and these promotions can go up to the level of Chiefs of Police or Commissioner.

6. Promotions: The mayors, sheriff or the chief of commissioner is accountable for their allocated area of attention. These people are mostly selected from the locality. The following cadre goes to the Assistant Sheriff or Assistant commissioner and there could be various of police personnel's in that status in the region. Below the rank comes the deputy commissioner or deputy chief. Then in keeping with descent you will find the rank of Inspector or commander, colonel, major, captain, Lieutenant, sergeant, detective and officer.
