Buying a pair of ice skates for the first time can be a bit overwhelming as there as so many options to choose from with such a wide range of prices. If you have always rented your skates, going into or clicking onto a skate shop without doing some research first can be daunting. Here are some tips of things to consider when buying your skates.

* Think about what level of skater you are. Skates are usually grouped into beginner, intermediate or advanced and the level will affect what you can do with the skates. Understandably, an advanced skate will have more complex features than a beginner one, and will have a higher price to go with it.

* If you are using your skates for entering competitions, you will want a more robust option, perhaps featuring reinforcements, padding or leather soles. These are normally features on intermediate or advanced skates. Recreational skates, however, are easier to get on and off and great for skating for fun, but will be no good for doing jumps and spins. Beginner skates often have the same features as recreational skates

* Check out the leather. Even if a boot claims to be made from 'real leather', this might have little impact on the quality of the boot, depending on where the manufacturer has used the leather and what thickness and quality it is.

Skates.co.uk are an online skate shop with a wide range of different skates for all levels of ability. You can call their ice skates shop for further expert advice if you are still not sure which kind of skate you need to buy, but every listing in their ice skates shop gives full information on skill level, sizes and features, such as the material used and if there is padding or reinforcements.
