The cheapest way of drying does not require any investment as they can be dried by using the heat of the sun or by the drying effects of the breezes. But due to the protest by some house owners associations or due to the rule of the municipalities in some planned communities of the cities, clothes lining are prohibited.

Most of the other electrical equipments, they do not vary much with respect to the amount of energy. This may be the reason why most of the dryers do not display the EnergyGuide Labels. This is one of the most energy consuming appliances of the homes after the refrigerators in the world.

Almost all of the modern dryers available in the market work on the same principle. Initially they tumble the clothes and remove the moisture by passing through heated air.

These are comparatively simple and are differentiated on the basis of how they heat the air. For heating the air they make use of either gas or electricity as the heating medium.

Gas type dryers are a bit costly as compare to their electrical counterpart. This is nullified by the fact that the maintenance and operation of the gas type is quite cheap. Moisture sensor dryers are most preferred as they do not expose their clothes to heat or moisture unnecessarily. These machines shut off themselves automatically as they do not sense the moisture. Most of the modern drying appliances are equipped with these sensors as they make use of less energy. The consumers from all over the world prefer to go for the electric types with sensors. The dryers with thermostats and timers are not preferred much.

Almost all of the dryers make use of electric motor for turning the large drum which is used for tumbling action of the clothes. They also exhibit an electric fan which is used for distributing the hot air.

In case of Gas dryers, a gas burner is used for creating heat, remaining all of the operations is same as electric dryers. The electric dryer need 240 volts outlet whereas a gas dryer need a gas hookup.

Many of the dryers available in the market would ask for high price for offering numerous choices with their equipment which include several high-tech features. These features can usually be replaced with several other standard settings. They would also charge extra for the touchpad which sounds impressive but this does not help to improve the performance of the appliances.

The market offers an array of dryers from all the leading brands available such as Maytag, GE, Whirlpool and Amana etc. Maytag is one of the oldest brands which are in the market since a century and still remained one of the best sellers of the equipments today. This has become the name of the durability and quality.

GE is another brand that manufactures dryers in combination with washing machine and tumbling dryer. These are important in the areas where space is of prime concern and cleaning of the clothes is not a great deal.

These can be evaluated on the basis of performance, temperature of the air, energy, performance and noise.
