Stargazing Shelving

A great problem with storing any kind of scientific equipment is that much of it is both cumbersome and delicate. This is something that Peter McNulty – Lecturer in Astronomy at one of the UK's leading universities – knows full well. 'In addition to the large array telescopes and radio telescopes which are permanently fixed in position, we have a number of portable telescopes that students can borrow and use for study in their own time' he says. 'Finding suitable shelf storage for this gear has always been a bit of a nightmare because by their very nature telescopes are long, cumbersome, heavy and fragile'. Peter has spent a great deal of time trying to source suitable industrial shelving which will accommodate the weight and the delicacy of his faculty's equipment. 'A further problem' he adds 'is that the telescopes are being taken on and off the shelves all the time. As soon as one student returns a piece of kit another takes it out. It's all too easy for a student to accidently give a 'scope a whack against the shelves in their eagerness to get out with the gear'.

The main pro

blem Pete faces is that he needs wide span shelving that is only supported at the four corners of the unit so that the risk of equipment hitting any interim load-bearing stanchions is eliminated. However, he also needs units with a high weight tolerance despite the minimal support. Fortunately for Pete contemporary industrial shelving more than adequately meet his needs; developments now make light weight yet sturdy industrial shelving available. In the past chipboard shelves with metal supports would be a cheap and unsatisfactory option, liable to damage and stress failure; however the needs of client's such as Pete have led to massive improvements in this area: now inexpensive, light and robust storage is a reality.
