Aerials in Coventry may be among those disturbed in 2013

Many people may have had aerial installations in Coventry or made changes to their TV aerials in Coventry in a bid to ensure their televisions can receive digital signal.

However, just like individuals across the country, some of these consumers may experience disruption to their signals in 2013 when new 4G mobile networks come online, the Financial Times reports.

According to Ofcom, which regulates the TV and radio sectors, as well as fixed line telecoms and mobiles and the airwaves over which wireless devices operate, around three per cent of digital terrestrial television viewers will be affected. This equates to around 760,000 homes.

Although it is thought that those in north-west England may be most affected, it has not been ruled out that individuals who have had aerial installations in Coventry or made alterations to TV aerials in Coventry could feel the effects too.

The people thought to be most at risk are those who reside in properties like blocks of flats, where a large number of televisions share a single rooftop aerial and need an amplifier to boost this. Also, consumers who rely on small aerials attached directly to their sets may suffer.

According to Ofcom, mobile operators should bear the estimated £100 million costs that will be needed to deal with the difficulties.

Commenting on the topic, a spokesperson for the regulator said: "It is an issue but it is not insurmountable. There are plenty of mitigations to ensure everyone can continue watching TV."

According to the Financial Times, people whose TVs are tuned to channel 60, which is at the higher end of the digital terrestrial television broadcast range and is adjacent to the section of airwaves, will experience the most acute problems.

Meanwhile, Ofcom has suggested that most of the homes affected will be able to rectify the difficulties by fitting a filter to their aerials.
