Cambridge consortium to test TV white space

Because of the switchover from analogue to digital TV, many people may have undergone aerial installations in Cambridge and aerial repairs in Cambridge to ensure their TVs can receive the necessary signals.

One of the reasons for the switchover is to create more airwave space for provisions such as broadband. A consortium based in Cambridge is set to test out some of the technology involved in this process. The group, which includes Microsoft, BT and the BBC, will assess whether so-called 'white space' radio systems can communicate.

The provisions are designed to get greater use out of the radio spectrum allocated for TV broadcast and radios that use TV broadcast spectrum to communicate but do not interfere with TV transmissions are to be assessed.

In a statement, the group said: "With the number of connected devices and data applications growing rapidly, and with mobile networks feeling the strain, we must find ways of satisfying the traffic demands of today and tomorrow.

"This trial will attempt to demonstrate that unused TV spectrum is well-placed to increase the UK's available mobile bandwidth, which is critical to effectively responding to the exponential growth in data-intensive services, while also enabling future innovation."

If such technology proves to be a success, those who have made use of aerial installations in Cambridge and aerial repairs in Cambridge may be among those to benefit from the results in future.

There are a number of reasons behind the digital switchover in the UK. As well as meaning that less broadcast space is taken up compared with an analogue signal, it also enables consumers to benefit from a stronger signal and a broader selection of television channels.

The transition is due to be completed by the end of the next year and work continues apace to make this a reality.
