Undergraduate academic curricula of universities consider essay writing as a method to evaluate a scholar's grip over a language. Essay writing is also considered a method of evaluation for getting admission to universities.
With so much emphasis being given to essay writing we need to understand what is essay writing all about. Does it require specialized skills or anybody can write it with ease? Is there any particular format to write an essay? Like these there are many questions that may be there in your mind. Well! We have tried to answer some questions that may help you to get a better understanding about the subject.
Essay writing definitely requires some skills. You need to have a good grasp on the language; you need to have good research skills, analytical skills and should be able to structure the essay in the correct format. An essay is not a lengthy description of the topic. On the other hand it is a short description and covers the major points. At an undergraduate level an essay writing assignment should consist of 2000-2500 words. Professional writers who write essays for publishing generally write a shade lengthier that classroom essays. Such essays are sometimes written in a series so that they cover the entire scope of the theme. Essay writing is a skill which develops overtime and with practice.
Essay writing is all about relating to the theme. Once you have the topic in your hand you need to start with researching the topic and collecting material which will help you in supporting your point of view. An essay has three basic parts. The first part is the introduction, followed by the body and finally the conclusion. The introduction should always start on a convincing note and clearly state the theme of the subject. It should give the reader a clear understanding of the topic. The body which follows the introduction should start stating facts which support the theme. The body should give as much details as possible because the writer can bring out all facts supporting his arguments in this section. The conclusion should be a natural extension of the body which reiterates the theme and conveys the author's verdict to the audience.

An essay has different genres. Some are argumentative, some are narrative, some historical while others are persuasive. Writing an essay to a certain extent depends upon which genre of essay you are writing. Though the structure remains the same, the style of writing changes as per the kind of essay you are writing. If you are writing a narrative essay you do not need to concentrate too much on arguments and rationale. A narrative essay is generally an expression of a person's experience at different times during their life. An argumentative essay on the other hand needs to be supported by facts. So as we see essay writing is all about conveying a message in the writer's unique style. If you are interested in language , essay writing can develop into a full fledged career for you.
