Storage media of Maxell LTO-3 is composed of ceramic armor metal particles that help to assure superior magnetic stability of tape reel during harsh working conditions. Maxell has significantly reduced the size of magnetic particles to achieve higher bit density and enhanced magnetic energy performance. Maxell's advanced manufacturing process coats the tape media with an ultra fine layer of ceramic material. Ceramic is a highly robust material that secures the tape reel from corrosion, thus resulting in reduced wear and tear. This enables the Maxell LTO-3 tape to deliver advanced archival storage, superior data accuracy and extremely low error rate.
Robust storage medium and exception physical properties enable the Maxell LTO3 tape to perform excellently with over 1 million passes. To ensure greater track stability during high density recordings, Maxell has introduced polyethylene Naphthalate (PEN) base film in its LTO 3 tape cartridges. This has resulted in a smoother tape reel that will allow seamless tape movement during heavy duty cycles.

Even distribution of stress across the tape reel is critical to assure superior archival and storage operations during high density recordings. That is why Imation has developed "3 piece tape spool" mechanism which distributes the stress and reduces the tape tension for better performance and tape longevity.
