The Business of Making Catalogs

Are you currently working for a publishing or graphics design business and you want to get away from the mold in order to set up your own business? Why not get into the catalog printing business? Owning a business and becoming your own boss is a very attractive thought for many people. And if you had some knowledge of publishing, you can offer the printing of catalogs to small and medium scale enterprises that cannot afford to pay for the professional services of established graphics design houses.

And the good thing is that the business of making catalogs is very easy to set up and maintain. But it is also very profitable because you do not need a lot of working capital. Plus, it is very rewarding because you get to help improve the small businesses who cannot afford to put out expensive catalogs. If you are looking into this aspect, here are some guidelines for you.

Firstly, write a business plan for your new business. You could start a home-based business or a big operation if you have the capital. But whatever level you might want to start with, you will need a business plan to help lead you in the way that your company is going. You will also need to identify potential problems, issues, and challenges that you might encounter along the way. This does not just apply a catalog printing business. This is true for all kinds of new ventures.

Secondly, register your catalog business to appropriate agencies. Business registrations will make your venture legitimate and that means you can bring your business to any kind of store or office. You are also allowed to purchase items like supplies on wholesale prices if you are a business entity. The process is quite easy but you will have to pay some annual fees and then of course, taxes.

Thirdly, depending on the level of business that you want to establish, find the suppliers that you need. If you want to start small, you can have a small office with one or two layout artists while you serve as the account executive that will look for clients. You do not need to have a printing press but rather you can work with a good company who can handle the printing jobs for you. Your company then will just act as the liaison between the client and the printer. Your office will also handle the creative side. But if you think that you can afford to purchase the printing machines, you will have to look for suppliers that could give you good value machines as well as customer support and technical service. Additionally, if you will handle printing you need suppliers for ink and paper stock. You can start your search on the internet.

Fourthly, advertise your new business in appropriate venues like the internet. But the most effective would be to visit the local shops in your area and ask them if they need a brochure for their products. They are the best clients because they know that they need catalogs in order to move their products but they just don't know how to go about it or they don't just have time to put it together. That will be your cue and get their catalog printing business. Just make sure that you deliver what you had agreed upon and your business will grow even with just word of mouth referrals.
