Low Profile Scales

Scales with profiles that range from 1 ¾” to 1 7/8” high are ideal for weighing livestock or heavier items that may be more difficult to load on to the scale. One of the most difficult weighing tasks in the industrial and farming industries is loading the object that is to be weighed on the scale. If the platform is too high, the scale may be difficult to use in many instances.

In weighing livestock, you may notice that the higher a scale is the less comfortable the animal will be to step onto the scale. Many low profile scales come with ramps attached. These ramps make it easier to get on top on the weighing platform. Some of these scales also have cages or crates attached so that animals will stay in place once on the scale.

There are many low profile scales with capacities that exceed 2500 pounds. These scales should be constructed with four stainless load cells embedded in welded frame for maximum shock and abuse resistance and a formed display enclosure with rubber gasket for water resistance.

Many of these platform scales come with exceptional weight display technology. There are low platform scales by Bright Scales that have a large 1” graphics digital display that are fully feature equipped. There are pushbutton functions for automatic and keyboard tare with 450 memory locations, zero, net/gross and multiple unit conversions including lb, kg, oz, troy, etc.

Accuracy is very important on all scales. There are low platform scales offered by Bright Scales that are exceptionally accurate. There is an internal resolution to 1 part in 500,000 and an excellent weight resolution up to 0.1lb.
In order to achieve a lower platform on your scale you may want to use four load cells. Each load cell should be placed at the corner of the scale. Load cells tend to be the most expensive element of most industrial scales. However, the benefits of using a scale designed with four load cells may be substantial. Generally, it does not matter where the load is placed on the scale platform. The load will still be shared between the four load cells. The total weight value is determined by signals that come from each of the cells. Since side loads are now minimal, the load cells can be smaller. This can create a lower profile.

Using a good material to fabricate the load cell can also reduce scale height. Aluminum is a popular material to use for this purpose. Aluminum typically isn™t an expensive material and it can be easily constructed into a desired shape. However stainless steel is greater quality and if a load cell fabricated with stainless steel it tends to be smaller and more rugged.
