Picture yourself 10 years ago searching for the name and number of a local business. You dig into a drawer on your telephone stand, lug out a hefty tome of yellowed paper, and crack it open. You may know the name or the type of business you are looking for, but you need to find the appropriate category in an A-Z listing and try to thumb to the appropriate page. You scan through a dozen or so listings until you’ve found the right one, look up the phone number, and lift your phone’s receiver from its base.
Along the way, you probably spotted two or three other potentially useful listings in that book, some of which even had pretty, albeit black-and-white, pictures vying for your attention. You may have even called one of them instead, since you spotted their ad with an amazing deal outlined on the inked page. Either way, once you’re finished with your phone call you hang up, put the book back in the drawer, and try to wipe the newsprint feeling off of your fingertips.

If you were a business owner trying to advertise, you might have paid a premium to feature your ad in a static listing. You had to be careful not to run a campaign which would be ending in a month or two, since the phone book it would be printed in might sit in someone’s drawer for six months or more and you would hate to have to tell them that the special deal they just found had ended last March. Worse, you wouldn’t be able to reach anyone outside of your local market who subscribes to the same phone company, since each different provider distributed their own special books to their subscribers. Finally, you had to decide before you placed the order just how much you were willing to spend on the ad, and you would never be able to tell exactly what the return on your investment might be.
Now, thanks to the wonder of the internet, all of that has changed. Business owners can reach a worldwide audience, advertise across hundreds of different listings, choose how much they would like to pay for each customer who found them through their ads, and track their campaigns to get an accurate picture of just how much their investments are paying off. With all of the sophistication though, it can be difficult to know where to put your marketing dollars to get your ads seen and to target the demographic you want to show them to. You can sign up for Google Adwords, choosing to pay anywhere from one to dozens of dollars per click, or you can submit your company’s information to local directories like Yelp, YP.com (the new Yellow Pages), Facebook, and Google Places. The options are virtually endless, but they all take time and effort to set up and it can be difficult to know just where you should start first for the best possible exposure.
