Qualifications For Online Teaching Jobs

Teaching jobs require qualified teachers. That goes without saying. But what are the appropriate qualifications? Teaching jobs in state schools will typically require state-approved licensure or certification, and having such certificates will be a great advantage. In many teaching jobs, both online and in traditional educational settings, qualifications are the key to the door and there is no other way in. However, not all online teaching jobs require formal qualifications. One of the secrets of making a success of an online teaching job is to understand the importance and role of qualifications in different areas of education.

When Qualifications are Vital

Quite obviously, there are some areas of education in which qualifications are required for the protection and welfare of both the educator and the learner. That could be for safety reasons or to protect the psychological well-being of the learner. It also goes without saying that qualifications, such as a degree – and perhaps a Masters or doctoral degree – are vital if one plans to teach undergraduates.

Even if you think you have the qualification, at least on paper, more may be required for some teaching jobs. Many careers also demand membership of a professional body before graduates can become practitioners. As far as online teaching jobs are concerned, qualifications play yet another role. It's highly likely that you will not be the only person out there offering an educational service in your field of expertise. To attract students, your expertise, to which qualifications are testimony, must be demonstrable and verifiable.

Batting In the Right League

Accurate self-assessment is also vital if you want to make a success of an online teaching job. Having a degree in a subject doesn't necessarily make you an expert. Similarly, several degrees in a subject won't necessarily make you a competent teacher. Realistic valuation of your skills is important. Over-egg your abilities and you'll likely end up with dissatisfied students at best and a reputation in ruins at worst.

For people starting out in an online teaching job, it's best to start modestly. If you have an undergraduate degree, consider tutoring in your subject, not primary instruction. In time you can always up your game and take on more ambitious projects as your skills are honed and your ability verified by happy and successful learners who have benefited from your inputs.

Certification v. Proven Ability

Online teaching jobs are available in all sorts of fields. In some, proven ability is worth as much as, or even more than a paper qualification. This can be especially so in practical subjects. You may be able to recite the manual of photography, but someone who has a reputation as a photographer may be the more desirable teacher. Similarly, you can have a Ph.D. in French but a native French speaker may be better equipped to deliver the goods in some scenarios.

Though this principle applies especially to practical subjects, and certification is generally less important in teaching leisure pursuits and hobbies, there are exceptions. Home schooling is a growing educational field. If you have experience of successfully home schooling your own children that can be a superb qualification for teaching others online.

The Bottom Line

In any teaching job, online or not, qualifications always help. However, if you are able to realistically assess your subject knowledge and teaching skills, and if you are confident you can deliver a quality service, don't let lack of qualifications put you off, as long as you know your limits. If you have knowledge to share and the ability to impart it, you can still find a niche in which to create a rewarding career and help others on their educational quest.
