As you explore your technical career options, you may be asking yourself, "Just what does a veterinary technician do?" This career is centered on animals, of course, which you can surely assume from the fact that the word "veterinary" is in the title. If you want to work with animals but can't see yourself completing eight or more years of school to become a veterinarian, this could be the ideal job for you. You can complete a certificate or associate's degree program to become a veterinary technician in one or two years, and you can begin working right away. But first, you should learn exactly what a veterinary technician does.

Primary Roles of the Veterinary Technician
As a veterinary technician, your biggest role will be to assist the veterinarian in his or her daily tasks. You may assist the veterinarian with administering intravenous medications, examinations, surgeries, and other procedures. Vet techs also typically perform all the lab tests, such as blood tests, fecal tests and urine analyses.

There are also a variety of administrative tasks or "front office" duties that a veterinary technician might fulfill. These include greeting clients at the front desk, filing papers, filling out paperwork, handling pet insurance protocol and so on. Large veterinary offices and hospitals may have entry-level employees that are solely responsible for these types of duties so that the vet techs can work more with the animals, while smaller offices have the vet techs perform them.

Veterinary technicians also do a lot of the communicating with clients to help educate them about their pets. You may be responsible for telling clients what is going on with their pets, advising them about how to care for them, describing the proper ways to administer medications, explaining the best foods to give them and sharing additional health measures that should be taken. Some veterinary technicians are even responsible for assisting clients with animal behavior when they are facing difficult obedience cases, although this is less common. It is not unheard of for vet techs to lead obedience classes for pet owners, though, so if this is something you want to do, there's no reason it can't become a part of your career experience.

A career as a veterinary technician could be very rewarding if you are a hard worker and have a love for animals. The schooling can be completed in less than two years, and you can be working in the field right away.
