Does Invisalign Work

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign is a newer technology that is intended to replace traditional braces as a method for straightening teeth. It is constructed of liners made of clear plastic which the patient can remove to eat, brush their teeth or floss. They are not noticeable to others during the course of normal wear, which for the average patient is up to 22 hours a day. Compared to braces made of brackets and wire, Invisalign is more comfortable to wear and does not irritate the gums or inner cheeks like traditional braces can.

Patients who are interested in Invisalign should make an appointment with one of our dentists for a consultation. If he or she determines that your teeth could benefit from adjustment with Invisalign, an impression will be made of your mouth which will help your dentist know how to make removable liners for the shape of your mouth and design of your individual teeth. Although Invisalign is most commonly used to straighten crooked teeth, it can also be used to correct under bites and jaw problems.

After we have the results of your impressions back, we will be able to outline a plan of treatment. Before you leave our office, your dentist will show you a visual representation of what your teeth could look like after your treatment with Invisalign is done.

Approximately 30 liners will be designed, depending on the number of teeth you have. Each set of liners will be designed to encourage movement of your teeth into a straighter pattern. You will need to replace your liners approximately every two weeks during treatment, and every new set of liners will be more progressive than the last until your dental treatment has been completed.

Many patients who are initially concerned about the cost of Invisalign are surprised to learn that at least part of their treatment is covered by their dental plan just as traditional braces would be. However, if some or all of the cost is not covered, speak to our office about setting up a payment plan to spread your payments out over time. We believe Invisalign is a good treatment alternative and we want to help you achieve your goal of a better smile in any way that we can.

Another good option to be aware of is Flexible Spending Accounts which are available through many employers. If you know the approximate cost of treatment with Invisalign and plan ahead, you can start having payroll deductions made on a pre-tax basis once your treatment begins.

If you have been embarrassed about your smile for years but are afraid you have missed the window of opportunity for braces, think again. With Invisalign, your teeth can be straightened in a shorter amount of time without anyone having to know about it.
